4 = positive and bright, polite telephone manner.

‘I’d like to say something about this…’ (Direction to voice over - 4 different tones of voice 1 = interested and enthusiastic – emphasis on ‘this’. 2 = loud, aggressive and short. 3 = forthright with emphasis on ‘I’d’. 4 = bored-disinterested.

When the learner clicks each photo they hear the following:

 

‘Can you fetch the ladder for me please?’ but 3 different tones of voice 1 = sarcastic – emphasis on ‘can you’ (as if suggesting the person probably can’t manage this simple task). 2 = said as if speaking to a young child – pause before and emphasis on ‘ladder’. 3 = polite with no emphasis on any particular word.
