Adult literacy and numeracy

Adult Literacy and Adult Numeracy are the correct names for what used to be called ‘basic skills’. Standards and qualifications for these start at Entry Level 1 of the National Qualifications Framework. Next come Entry Levels 2 and 3, after which the learner can move up to Level 1, which is a similar standard to GCSE at grades D to G. Level 2 (similar to GCSE A* to C) is the highest level for Adult Literacy and Adult Numeracy.

People aiming for qualifications in Adult Literacy and Numeracy at levels 1 and 2 take the same tests as people aiming for key skill Communication and Application of Number at levels 1 and 2.
